Rock and roll means well but it can’t help telling young boys lies – Drive-By Truckers
As careers go, pub rock can either be an inspired or idiotic choice of vocation. Certainly both thoughts crossed the mind of a young Errol Moyle as he worked his way through 500 odd gigs with Newcastle pub stalwarts, Muzzy Pep. Formed in 2000 by Errol and Scott Blackley, Muzzy Pep was one of the early JJJ Unearthed winners and in addition to writing wry lyrics over great pop hooks, they were tireless road warriors.
A band that had the unusual knack of spending equal time gigging in the inner city and at regional shows, Muzzy Pep was eventually worn down by the same factors that halted plenty before them, no money and no sleep. Errol found himself back in Newcastle with casual work, a cheap recorder and a rejuvenated love of making music. Enjoying a rest from the band format and as an accomplished drummer / multi-instrumentalist, Errol quickly recorded a stack of demos. Eventually recruiting journeyman engineer and producer Tim Whitten (78 Saab, Bluebottle Kiss, Art of Fighting) the pair took a leisurely approach to turning those demos into the album The Truth Is Boring.
Lyrically exploring the theme of “decisions” and how seemingly dramatic outcomes can often be the result of the most mundane of circumstances, The Truth Is Boring is a modest exploration of destiny and choices.
Releasing the first single, Zeros and Ones under the name of Errol JM, it was once again support from JJJ that encouraged Errol to assemble a band and begin to play live. With the release of the The Truth Is Boring, audiences around the country can once again look for Errol JM either on stage or in the Tarago – still trusting rock and roll to his detriment!
Errol JM’s band is: Luke Bennett – drums/percussion Anthony Frampton – bass/vocals Cameron McKenzie – lead guitar/vocals
