Bio:
The Exiles on King St!
Instead of the basement beneath the Villa Nellcôte in France, a pile of music equipment plus a vintage 8 track tape machine was set up in the front room of bass player, Fiona Whalley’s flat. An unlimited studio — above a shop in Sydney’s alternative epicenter, King St, Newtown — and a group of musicians with deep roots in the Sydney music scene was always going to be a rich experience. So, over weeks of late night recording sessions, frequently joined by post-gig drinkers, there couldn’t have been a better place to record The Sound of Someone Leaving, a journey into the dark, gothic heart of country music.
Added to the unusual recording environment, was the usual resume of The Exiles themselves. An album made by past members of bands such as Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Spurs for Jesus, The Hazelwoods and The Del Emmas guarantees an adventure! A kitschy, spaghetti-fueled, broken relationship of an adventure.
Recorded and mixed by veteran Sydney musician, Tim Kevin (La Huva) with help from Midnight Oil’s Jim Mogine, The Sound of Someone Leaving is a stunning demonstration of what the right ears can do with recording equipment that stopped being popular before Gram Parsons made his trip to Joshua Tree.
