The Great Dividing Range
Bio:
Half a lifetime on the road has seen Scott Blackley traverse the four continents. From squatting in the Yukon training sled dogs, surfing the coastlines of South Africa, Central and South America, working as a carpenter building anything from boats to mosques to racing endurance horses and touring Australia relentlessly with Muzzy Pep (Unearthed in 1998), he has barely justified paying rent. Known as the principal prolific songwriter with Muzzy Pep and a swag of bands in Canada and the US, he now returns to centre stage with a brand new album and band, The Great Dividing Range. In November 2003, Scott made the journey to the west coast port city of Fremantle. There he built a new recording studio (Studio Couch) for Producer Shaun O’Callaghan (Jebediah, John Butler Trio & Eskimo Joe). O’Callaghan whom Blackley met on surf trips up and down the WA coast in the late 80s, early 90s agreed to work together on a handshake “you build me a studio and I’ll record you an album”. Returning in May of 2004 with the help of Nick Munnings (Faker), Luke Bennett, Rachelle Higgins and a host of WA friends, the debut was tracked. Wanderlust and the ever-changing perspectives it brings, has left Blackley refusing to become a prisoner of nostalgia. The Great Dividing Range have crafted thirteen songs of humour, irony, hooks and twang. The self titled album is an original and uniquely Australian look at one of the most consistently creative and inventive musical genres around. In 2005, after already stirring keen interest locally with performances in and around home town Maitland and Newcastle, The Great Dividing Range will be making their way to a town near you with their debut album (released on Nonzero and distributed by Shock). In the meantime, have a listen to what could be the sleeper, surprise CD of the year, from one of our newest homegrown acts, sure to prick the ears of discerning music lovers around Australia.
